The foundation of Russian Geographical Society

The first geographical societies appeared in Paris (1821), Berlin (1828) and London (1830). By the direct order of the Russian Emperor Nicholas I the project of first Russian Geographical Society (later Imperial Russian Geographical Society) created by the Minister of Internal Affairs Perovski was approved in August 18, 1845. Russian Geographical Society promotes exploration of the “native land and its inhabitants”: collection and dissemination of geographical, statistical and ethnographic information about Russia.
