Works of Rabindranath Tagore, writer, poet, artist, composer and activist reshaped Bengali literature and music. He advocated for the independence of India. In 1912 the first translations of Tagore's works were published in London. After that he became famous in the UK and in the USA. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.

Tagore is the author of national anthems of India and Bangladesh. His oeuvre includes lyric poetry, essays and novels on political and social themes. Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced) and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works and were acclaimed for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism and contemplation in literature.
