Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

18
January 2020

This holiday celebrates the life and ideals of the black activist for civil rights Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 to credit his role in passing the law removing all vestiges of racial discrimination in the USA. At 35, he became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in history. The world recognized the value of King’s contribution to the cause of peace. However, it was only in 1983, 15 after his death, that the US Congress constitutionally recognized the importance of King’s heritage by making the third Monday in January a federal holiday in honour of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday.
