International Day of the Elimination of Violence against Women was established in 1981. The UN suggested that governments, international organisations and NGOs carry out activities raising public awareness of this problem. An event, which led to proclaiming this awareness day, took place in the Dominican Republic in 1961, when on the orders of the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo three women activists the Mirabal sisters were savagely murdered.
