Well-traveled and brilliantly educated, Alfred Edmund Brehm was appointed Director of Hamburg Zoo in 1863. In 1867, he moved to Berlin to open Berlin Aquarium. In 1877, he explored Western Siberia and Eastern Turkestan and in 1878 some middle parts of the Danube River. Brehm wrote many academic and popular science papers which combine vigorous scholarship with entertaining style. These of his works are still popular today: “The Life of Animals”, “Bird-Life: Being a History of the Bird, Its Structure, and Habits, Together with Sketches of Fifty Different Species”. In the 20th century, several interpretations of the «Жизнь животных» have been published, which reflected the state of the science at the time of publication but kept Brehm’s original style, contents and illustrations.
